Happy 107th Birthday Mrs Margaret Ellmore

One of the sectors that WASHCO supports is care homes and sheltered housing facilities with their laundry equipment needs. Every once in a while, we get asked to participate in something different.

One of the lovely residents at Agnes House has just celebrated her 107th birthday. A birthday celebration had been planned by the staff, to include guests such as the Lord Mayor of Leicester and the Chairman of the County Council, as well as family and friends.

COVID-19 and the ensuing lockdown threw those plans into disarray.

Agnes House decided to see if they could spread the word of Mrs Ellmore’s birthday far and wide, encouraging as many people as possible to send a birthday card in celebration of Mrs Ellmore’s birthday.

When the message reached us at WASHCO HQ, we knew we definitely wanted to help Mrs Ellmore celebrate her birthday.

The charity originally asked for a contribution of 107 cards. The Care Manager, Louise Richards promoted the idea on BBC Radio Leicester and a plea was put out on social media.

The response was overwhelming. Over 1100 cards were sent to help Ms Ellmore celebrate! Along with our contribution, there were cards from local dignitaries and even the Queen. Mrs Ellmore has been lucky enough to receive a card from the Queen every year since she was 105.

Chris Jones, Chief Executive, has said that the appeal has surpassed all expectations and is a fantastic achievement.

Mrs Ellmore said it didn’t feel real, but she was very pleased.
