Five ways to lower your commercial laundry costs

Commercial laundry

If you operate an on-premise laundry (OPL) and want to manage your costs better, take a look at the five tips below.

Tip 1:  Switch to, or review, your chemical dosing

In a busy laundry, you can easily lose track of your chemicals and detergent costs. We would normally recommend that you use an automatic dosing system. It ensures you use the correct amount of product each time, helping to manage costs.

Get your dosing system serviced once a year if you’ve already made the switch to auto-dosing. This ensures that everything is working effectively. It also gives you the opportunity to check the chemicals and detergents you’re using are still suitable for your business.

Tip 2: Look after your dryers

Drying garments can easily become one of the more costly parts of your laundry operation. There are some simple actions you can take to ensure your drying process is as efficient as possible:

  • Clean your lint screen regularly – it will save energy and you’ll garments will dry more quickly
  • Don’t overload the drum – you’ll get more creasing and poor results, leading to longer drying cycles
  • Don’t open the door during the cycle – it makes the cycle much less efficient, taking longer and costing more

Tip 3: Use the highest spin speed possible

In general, the higher the spin speed the drier your items will be at the end of the cycle. Using the highest spin speed which is appropriate for the garments and fabric types you are washing will reduce tumble drying time and, ultimately, lower running costs.

Tip 4: Carry out maintenance washes

Running a regular maintenance wash is key to protecting your machines and ensuring they operate at optimum efficiency. It will help to clear any dirt, bacteria, scale and grease from the machine, keeping it clean and odour-free. For most OPLs, we recommend a weekly maintenance wash, but of course, it will depend on how frequently your machine is used.

Tip 5: Service your machines regularly

Regular servicing of your equipment is vital. Importantly, issues are detected before they become a bigger problem and it ensures your equipment is operating safely. All elements will be inspected – including gas safety checks and correct temperature validation. Click here to see what tasks WASHCO carries out on a service.
